SophLS showcases her selections and poetry in the short mix below. Enjoy!

Thank you so much for recording the mix, really appreciate it! For the uninitiated out there, introduce yourself, please?

Thank you! Hello! I’m Soph, well Sophie, I’m a poet and DJ from south London (Stockwell and Brixton area). I love poetry and have performed at some amazing places and for some sick institutions (Boiler Room TV, Just Jam TV, Shoreditch House, the ICA to name a handful).

Tell us a little about the mix. Did anything influence you while recording it?

The mix largely focuses on lyricism, in combination with beats. I wanted to showcase my latest project ‘Nasty’ in it, which is my first audiobook and was produced by Blay Vision. Shameless plug – you can find it on my website and will be downloadable shortly!

Tell us about your poetry, when did you start writing? Does poetry influence your selections at all?

I started writing time ago, but never shared anything, I guess I found it personal, a release that was mine. I only got the bug for performing after having stood up at my good friend James Massiah’s open mic at the A and the E. And I said the rudest things that have ever come out of my mouth – everyone laughed and smiled – and I thought “raaaaa, I can do this. I feel good”.

I definitely think poetry has influenced my selections, lyricism is an important part of my life and the music I listen to honours that.

What was the last record you bought? And, where is your favourite spot to go record shopping?

Last record I bought was Cock Back by N.A.S.T.Y ft Crazy Titch – a classic

The last thing I downloaded though was Traphouse Tyler’s first EP over at traphousetyler.com – it’s new and it’s different, you don’t know how many times I’ve listened to it!

I like Rye Wax and DNR vinyl has the maddest selection

What is your earliest memory of the club?

Memory doesn’t serve me too hot in this area! I remember going to plastic people before it closed, it blew my mind. It was so intimate, I felt so close to everyone around me and we were all there for one reason, to share that experience. I remember thinking that was important.

What was the last book you read?

After a mad stint of watching bare Adventure Time, I have really got into reading again. I just finished reading How Not to Die and Why I Am No Longer Talking to White People About Race

Send me a link to a YouTube video you always go back to?

I always like to go back to this video, was one of my proudest moments and makes me realise I can do anything ! The poets on that line up are sick and it was a proper honour to be posted alongside them.

And finally, what’s in store for the rest of 2018?

Hopefully more audiobooks and collabs . I want to be able to share my words and work with as many people as possible. I also would love love to do a Colours show, that’s my goal – link me up hahaha.
