Thank you so much for recording the mix, really appreciate it! For the uninitiated out there, introduce yourself
You’re welcome, thank you for showcasing it! I’m a producer from Nottingham, I mainly made music before with my friend and collaborator who produces under the name Slann, and it’s within the last couple of years that I’ve started to properly explore music production myself and work on solo projects.
Tell us a little about the mix. What are the main influences on your production?
I vaguely wanted to put something together that was a blend of dark ambient/noisy/drone stuff with urban/club/electronic influences, but to be honest it’s more just a mix of music and vibes I like and songs from producers I like. Maybe there’s a narrative in there that someone could tell me about. But it’s only very recently that I’ve started learning how to mix in earnest. For me, it’s requiring a different mindset from the more band/live set up and I’m slowly getting used to that.
What was the last record you bought? And, where is your favourite spot to go record shopping?
The last physical record I bought was probably The Fragile: Deviations by Nine Inch Nails. And I don’t think I have a favourite shop… is that boring? Amazon? (Just joking).
What is your earliest memory of the club?
Nothing much to tell I’m afraid, probably just some shitty night in Notts with friends. I’ve been to more gigs than I have club nights and so I think going to shows has had more of a direct influence on me.
What was the last book you read? And, does literature influence your music at all?
I’ve just finished reading The Long View by Elizabeth Jane Howard, I received it as a birthday gift from a friend. Frankly, it’s the most miserable book I’ve ever read. Maybe I overidentified with the perspective in the book, ha. I enjoy literature but I would say that film is more of an influence. Jiří Barta’s films provide the visual accompaniment a lot of the time when I’m working on music.
I’ve become really obsessed with film scores recently! Whats your favourite film score/soundtrack at the minute?
Right now the Godfather II soundtrack… it’s so romantic. And as always, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
And finally, whats next for harpey?
I’m currently working on an EP and a few collaborations, which should be finished and released within the next few months. Other than that, to get better at my craft.
